Haute Couture Week glides along in a big-ass flouncy ball gown (or in experimental formal pants, depending on your mood): this morning, in Paris, Raf Simons showed his fall/winter couture line for Dior. It was very conceptual.
In a giant futuristic cylinder, the walls of which were completely covered in orchids, various fashion luminaries were treated to a modern take on period costumes — in the show notes, Simons said that the collection was about brining “the attitude of contemporary reality to something historical.” Thus: voluminous brocade dresses with modern necklines and embroidered jackets inspired by the court of Louis XIV, interspersed with astronaut-looking jumpsuits, mini skirts, and delicate floral frocks. (“Raf asked himself how 18th century fashion could be re-interpreted with today’s codes,” Dior Chief Executive Sidney Toledano told Reuters after the show. “He looked at it not from the point of view of today, not one of a museum.”)
