Doctors Implore You To Stop Holding Silicone Injection Parties

Sorry to ruin your plans for next weekend, but it turns out gathering all of your friends to have silicone from Home Depot in injected into your asses by a “doctor” from a country you’ve never heard of isn’t a great idea.

We’ve heard horrifying tales of people undergoing DIY plastic surgery before, and always assumed these were just isolated incidents of people falling victim to the real-life equivalent of Dr. Nick Riviera. But apparently, there are so many people hankering for a cheaper, non-sterile way to achieve bigger lips, chins, breasts, and butts that “pumping parties” are becoming a problem.

Tomorrow Dr. Angel Coz, a pulmonary and critical care specialist at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, will present information on a recent patient who attended such a party at the American College of Chest Physicians’ annual meeting, USA Today reports. The 30-year-old woman, who received injections of non-medical grade silicone in a hotel room with five friends, arrived in the emergency room out of breath and coughing blood. She was diagnosed with silicone embolism syndrome after doctors found that the fat solvent used in silicone had traveled through her body and caused clots in the vessels in her lungs. Coz explains:

“There are two types of side effects that can result from silicone injections … Lungs is one of them. The other goes to the brain. The mortality in lungs is close to 20 percent but in the brain it’s close to 100 percent.”

Luckily, the woman survived, but doctors say that recently they’ve been seeing more diagnoses, and fatalities. Like every other negative trend these days, they believe it’s fueled by the recession. Dr. Malcolm Z. Roth, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, says people feel they can’t afford to go to a reputable doctor, and simply aren’t willing to live life with average-sized lips and butt cheeks. He adds:

“It’s really a white-coat deception. Sometimes the person doing the injections claims to be a physician from another country and in some cases the patient knows very well it’s not a physician but, feeling they can’t afford to go to a legitimate board-certified plastic surgeon, they find a short cut.”

Roth also offers a tip that we mistakenly thought was unnecessary: “You don’t do medical procedures in a hotel room or garage.” If people do find themselves in a Days Inn with a few BFFs, a bottle of pinot grigio, and a tube of silicone intended for home improvement projects, his advice is to “run away.”
