Five bicyclists were killed and four others were seriously injured on Tuesday night in Kalamazoo, Michigan, after the driver of a pickup truck plowed into the group and then attempted to flee.
Police received multiple reports of an erratic driver prior to the crash, and were in the process of actively searching for the truck when the incident occurred, the Detroit Free Press reports.
The 50-year-old driver tried to make a run for it, but was arrested not far from the blue pickup he abandoned at the scene. From the paper:
Names of the driver and victims were not released as police were still notifying families late Tuesday. All were adults, who apparently were riding together northbound on North Westnedge Avenue when they were struck from behind.
The four injured cyclists all remain in serious condition at area hospitals.
The driver’s charges—if there are any—will not be determined until Thursday.
