Erykah Badu Made a Mixtape to Save the Bees

Entertainment

Erykah Badu is as musically omnivorous as the best of ‘em, not just writing, creating, producing and recording songs but DJing them, too, under her turntables moniker DJ Low Down Loretta Brown. As another feather in her cap for this prolific streak she’s been having of late, she went on Zane Lowe’s Beats show right before U Cain’t Use My Phone and dropped a mix of jams she loves, staying wavy and dedicating it to the bees (actual bees) because, she wrote, “Save the bees, else we ain’t gone have no where to fight and discriminate… cause they aint have’n that shit on MARS.” It is true! They ain’t have that shit on Mars, and she is correct that if the bees die, we’re all toast.

The mix is less depressing than that truth, though! Entitled +++BEATS BEES LIKE FOR B-BOYS AND B-GIRLS+++, Badu runs through a whole gamut of enlightened shit like Thundercat, Toro y Moi and Hiatus Kaiyote—I love that she listens to Deerhoof, though that’s only surprising because the possibility hadn’t really occurred to me before—and she also gets classic, dropping in tracks by the likes of DeBarge, Loose Ends and Das EFX. It’s pretty great—give it a whirl and vibe out and save the bees.
