First Openly Gay New York Congressman Weds Partner
In DepthRep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) married his partner of 22 years Randy Gene Florke at the Church of St. Mary-in-the-Highlands in Cold Spring, New York.
The couple have three children aged 11 to 24. Maloney’s partner proposed in December after the youngest child wrote a letter to Santa Claus asking for her parents to finally be married. The 51-year-old Florke is a real estate and design executive at his own firm in New York City.
Even after 22 years together, we’re overwhelmed by how blessed we feel to celebrate this special day with our friends and family.
The 47-year-old Maloney represents the lower Hudson Valley region. Two members of Congress have been married to same-sex partners. Barney Frank (D-MA) left Congress in 2013, but married his partner in 2012. Mark Pocan (D-WI) married his partner before he was elected.
U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Gov. Andrew Cuomo congratulated the newlyweds via Twitter.
