HBO's New Series About Anne Lister, Gentleman Jack, Looks Fun

Entertainment

HBO has dropped the first full trailer for its upcoming Regency-era drama Gentleman Jack, and it frankly looks like a blast.

The series follows the adventurous life of Anne Lister; she’s often referred to as the “first modern lesbian,” according to the Guardian. Apparently she kept coded records of her affairs in a diary that ran to 27 volumes and millions of words. The adaptation is the work of Sally Wainwright, who also made Happy Valley. Deadline has the synopsis:

Jones plays Regency landowner Lister in the period drama, which is set in 1832 Halifax, West Yorkshire. Gentleman Jack focuses on the landowner, who is determined to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall, by reopening the coal mines and marrying well. The story examines Anne’s relationships at home with her family, servants, tenants and industrial rivals and, most importantly, would-be wife.

The show premieres April 22.
