“Grab Em by Da Pussy” is a Trump-sampling song released early Saturday by Mike Dean, the Grammy-winning producer who’s worked with Kanye West for over a decade and done tracks for Beyoncé and The Weeknd. Mike Dean is, like most of the rest of us, not a Trump fan.
A bass-y electro mix with a children’s choir, “Grab Em by Da Pussy” works as a piece of hyper-current pop-cultural kitsch. But the burning question is, did we really need this, my dude? It seems like Dean was probably imbibing something (just taking a guess here) and feeling late-night caustic, so threw together a little pastiche that doesn’t necessarily work as spoof because, well, it’s kinda too, too real out here. Also, hearing Trump say “bitch” over and over on beat doesn’t work the same way as it might on a different song by an actual artist using “bitch” as slangy or reclaimative—the context here is that Trump actually thinks it, and on the tape was casually discussing sexual assault. Alas, listen if you gotta; we could maybe use some comic relief.
