This past weekend, professional soccer player and US women’s national team standout Hope Solo was arrested for allegedly drunkenly attacking her sister and 17-year-old nephew, after telling the teen he was too fat to be an athlete. Yesterday, she posted a Facebook note to the fans indicating that she’s sups sorry.

I would like to apologize to my fans, teammates, coaches, marketing partners and the entire US Soccer and Seattle Reign FC communities for my involvement in a highly unfortunate incident this past weekend. I understand that, as a public figure, I am held to a higher standard of conduct. I take seriously my responsibilities as a role model and sincerely apologize to everyone I have disappointed.I love my family dearly. We, like all families, have our challenges but my sincere hope is that we are able to resolve this situation as a family. Adversity has always made us stronger and I know this situation will be no different.

Police responded to the call and found Solo “intoxicated and upset,” her nephew bleeding in a torn T-shirt. Her sister, the boy’s mother, was also visibly injured. The teen said Solo called him “too fat” to be an athlete. They asked her to leave, but she stayed, they said, “circling like a shark.” The boy ultimately tried to fight her off with a broken BB gun and a broom. After Solo’s half-sister got her out of the house, she allegedly hopped a fence and re-entered through a sliding door.
Solo, who is a 32 year old adult woman who allegedly tried to fight a 17-year-old boy, has pled not guilty to two charges of fourth degree domestic assault. In the past, she’s made headlines for her excellent play on the field as well as for shit talking her teammates off the field (after the US lost to Brazil 4-0 in the 2007 World Cup, she told reporters that she would have made the saves her teammate Briana Scurry missed).
Later in her Facebook note, she indicates that she looks forward to getting “back on the field” with the US Women’s National Team. The Women’s World Cup is slated to take place next year.
