I Wouldn’t Want to Look Like My Dad Either If My Dad Was George Bush

As one of the many dad-faced girls out there, a little part of me dies every time someone says, “Wow! You look just like your dad!” (To their credit: I really do.) But every time it happens, to put it plainly, a visual of yassified Channing Tatum flashes before my eyes, and I think, “That’s what I look like?” Today, however, I found out it can get worse than just looking like your dad—especially if your dad is former President George W. Bush.

On Monday’s Today Show with Jenna & Sheinelle, after doing a series of independent interviews with all the former U.S. living presidents, Jenna Bush Hager—aka Bush’s daughter—was reviewing clips with her co-host, Sheinelle Jones, when Jones said the two “look just alike.” “I know everybody says it,” Jones said, “But dang.” Dang, indeed!

“I think my dad’s handsome,” Hager replied. (Technically, I guess Gen Z agrees.) “But when people say that, I’m like, ‘I look like a man?’” Speaking for dad-faced girls everywhere, she added, “Sometimes, that’s not a compliment.”

It’s never really a compliment to be told you look like a dude, even if that dude’s your dad. But it’s really not a compliment when you’re the literal offspring of Dick Cheney’s puppet—more commonly known as the would-be war criminal that tricked the nation into invading Iraq nearly two decades ago.

Along with Bush, Today interviewed Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton—all of whom got to independently speak in a special segment to commemorate the U.S.’s 250th anniversary. And while none of them explicitly named the current president, they didn’t really have to.

“Don’t give up on America,” Clinton said during his interview.

“We are the most unique country in the world in the sense that we really do think democracy is dictated by the rules of the Constitution,” Biden said.

“Remember what’s best in us,” Obama said during his part. “The basic principle upon which this country was founded, which is we don’t have rulers, we don’t have kings, or monarchs, or aristocracies. We have citizens.”

And Bush said, “If you don’t like what’s going on, vote…That’s how America heals itself.” Bold words from a man who did a lot of the previous wounding.
