I'm Quietly Screaming With Joy About Nicole Holofcener and Kathryn Hahn Working Together
EntertainmentDirector Nicole Holofcener, who makes perfect movies about nervous, funny women, is making a TV show with nervous, funny woman Kathryn Hahn.
The show, Mrs. Fletcher, is based on Tom Perrotta’s 2017 book of the same name. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it revolves around an empty-nest mom (played by Hahn) and her college-aged son in a sort of “dual coming-of-age story”:
Hoping to jump-start her love life, she adopts a sexy new persona and discovers that her world is full of unexpected — and sometimes complicated — erotic possibilities.
Is the book good? I don’t know and, honestly, I don’t really care? Holofcener’s dry movies like Enough Said and Walking and Talking—which have chronicled the quiet, revelatory bonds between female friends, sisters, and characters who revolve around Catherine Keener—have aged like a fine wine over the past few years. She also low-key gave Frances McDormand one of the best, angry performances of her career in Friends With Money, which surely rivals the role for which she recently won an Oscar. And Hahn has shined in shows like Transparent and I Love Dick, the latter of which was abruptly canceled after just one season. I’ll admit there’s probably a small part of me that still thinks Kathryn Hahn is literally Transparent’s endearing Rabbi Raquel, no matter what role she plays.
Basically, Nicole Holofcener could videotape Kathryn Hahn reading CVS receipts and I’d probably watch it. These two working together on an HBO show seems like a perfect pairing.
