Squad Link Up at Zac Efron’s New Cannabis House

I’ve been converted to the ways of the hemp house.

The post-Disney life can send a person in many different directions. From a Grammy-winning artist to a (pre-)Pulitzer Prize-winning Toxic Mom Group Essayist to co-hosting The View, it’s impossible to predict where a former Disney teen will end up. But here is your obligatory Zac Efron Update: He is building a house in Australia made entirely out of cannabis.

I wasn’t expecting Efron to go the all-organic, off-the-grid route, but I also wasn’t expecting whatever happened to his hair in The Iron Claw. I have to admit, I haven’t heard much about Efron since then—maybe because ads for video games like Battlefield 6 featuring Morgan Wallen don’t really come across my desk—but he is still here, posting Instagram sponcon with his brother, Dylan Efron, and pursuing new, exciting real estate ventures. Enter: the weed house.

“Russell Crowe told me it’s a good idea to get land in Australia. He did it when he was young,” Efron told the Australian Financial Review, “I love Australia, it’s cool.”

He calls it FutureCave (which sounds like what a tech supervillain would call their man cave or what a young boy would name his pillow fort). According to the AFR and People, Efron purchased the more than 300-acre plot of land in 2020 (that’s 128 hectares down under), somewhere near the New South Wales–Queensland border. Efron enlisted Australian architect Joost Bakker to design the six-bedroom house, which will be built entirely from hemp sourced from a nearby cannabis farm. The contents of the house will also be made of hemp, including the mattresses, curtains, and pillows, and Bakker is even working with an appliance maker to create a hemp-drum washing machine. Plus, there’s a rooftop garden (gee, I wonder what he’ll grow up there…).

“I’ve lived just about everywhere you can for several months or even years at this point,” Efron added, “and I think if I had to look back at my whole life and think where do I ultimately want to end up, every time I go to Joost’s I have a sense of ‘this is actually what I want in life.’ It just seems right. Like, that’s the way it should be done.”

Lying my head down on a sustainable and natural hemp pillow and a cozy hemp throw actually sounds incredible. At least it’s not a pile of microplastics and PFAS. You know what? I’ve been converted. I want to live in the hemp house. Let’s all go to Australia.

And for your second, somewhat more pressing Zac Efron update: I’m happy to report that Post-Iron Claw, his hair has officially returned back to normal. Hooray!
