A reminder to anyone who wasn’t already feeling sick with fear at the prospect of our society’s swift and inevitable decline: there is going to be a movie about emojis, it is called—wait for it—Emojimovie: Express Yourself, and it is coming out next August. Maybe we’ll all be dead by then.
Sony recently announced that Late Late Show host James Corden and Broad City’s Ilana Glazer have joined the voice cast, which doesn’t really do much to help quell the frantic feeling that life on earth is slowly caving in on itself!
According to a Sony press release, Emojimovie: Express Yourself “unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user.” Help!
Kristine Belson, President of Sony Pictures Animation, commented on the announcement saying, “Over six billion emojis are texted every day, and emojis have become a universal language that transcends age and culture. The power of emojis is that they allow you to express yourself in a fast and very fun way, and that is what our movie is about: self expression. We are very lucky to have some of the smartest and funniest actors today bringing their unique voices to this movie.”
Kristine, my friend, this is quite a stretch.
