In Time for Thanksgiving: A Pie You Can Buy
LatestJezebel Shop is a commerce feature from the business side of Jezebel. (So to be clear, this is not editorial.) This week, writer Anne Sage introduces us to Three Babes Bakeshop, which delivers homebaked, locally-sourced Thanksgiving pies right to your door.
Pie might be the last course of the Thanksgiving meal, but in our not-so-humble opinion, it’s the first one you should lock up when planning your Turkey Day menu. We know you agree — in 2010 you voted pie the dessert to rule them all. And what better way to secure yourself a sweet slice for after the table’s cleared than mail-ordering a pie from one of the country’s most coveted ovens?
This month we’re partnering with San Francisco’s Three Babes Bakeshop to bring you all the flaky crust and gooey filling your pastry-craving heart could desire. Three Babes first crossed our palate in the Fall of 2011 when Food and Wine Magazine named them one of America’s Best Pie Spots. At the time, the Bakeshop had been in business just six months — mere Babes in the woods of the American-as-apple-pie tradition.
Since that first major press accolade, Bon Appetit, Cooking Channel, and countless other outlets have praised the Babes for their commitment to sourcing the best ingredients from small, local vendors (they’re on a first name basis with their farmers); their signature sass (in their own words, “the Babeliness waxes and wanes depending on how well we can resist the pies…”); and their vast, seasonally rotating menu (think Cherry Rhubarb in the summer, Eggnog Custard in the winter). And although the Three Babes in truth number only two — childhood friends Anna and Lenore — they do the work of a small culinary army, concepting, sourcing, and baking the pies themselves.
Which brings us to this year’s mail-order pies. Choose from boozy Brown Butter Pecan, gluten-free Bittersweet Chocolate Pecan with homemade graham cracker crust, or the incomparable Salty Honey Walnut.
Each costs $35 plus shipping within the 48 continguous United States, serves 7-8 guests, and arrives with instructions to freeze until time to crisp in the oven. It’s a BYOWC situation-Bring Your Own Whipped Cream, that is. Thanksgiving is barreling towards us like a gravy freight train and the deadline for pre-order from Three Babes Bakeshop is today November 13.
