As part of her development deal with HBO, Issa Rae will executive produce a drama about a black family in Los Angeles, set in the ’90s.

Author Angela Flournoy—whose first book The Turner House, a novel about a Detroit family, made her a National Book Award finalistwill write and co-executive produce the project with Issa Rae, who said, “I was a huge fan of The Turner House and we feel so lucky to bring her beautiful storytelling to HBO.”

The Reagan/Clinton era serves as a social backdrop for the drama, which, according to Deadline, “will center on the marriage of Sheryl and Jackson, with the former an envelope bounds-pushing real estate agent and the latter a conflicted LAPD anti-gang task force recruit. The potential series will also feature the couples’ teen daughter and son, Ebony and Les.”

Issa and the creatives behind Insecure have made it a point to depict the city of Los Angeles as its own character, which might give an indication of what to expect with this still untitled project.
