Justin Bieber Is a Living Doodle in New Video With Skrillex & Diplo

Entertainment

Diplo and Skrillex are having a banger summer, both individually (Major Lazer’s “Lean On”; Skrillex and Katie Couric’s “Untitled”) and together as Jack Ü. “Where Are Ü Now,” their chart-topping dance jam with Biebs, rides on the strength of Biebs’ lithe falsetto and a melancholy squiggle of synths; in the new video, that synth squiggle turns literal as Bieber becomes a living sketchbook.

The clip was actually created by fans, who drew over video stills hanging on the walls of a Los Angeles art gallery, then animated over the moving images. “We wanted to just take it back to the beginning of the record and essentially create an ode to our fans,” Jack Ü said via press release. “We walk a fine line by being “famous” and in the public eye but we are only here because of you, the fans. Justin wrote this record during a tough time in his life and it comes to us that sometimes, as artists, we are also just objects and we have to take that as much as we have to use that to create. We all do this for you, respect that you put us here and it’s Ü that made the video.” Or, as Janet Jackson said, “IT’S ALL FOR ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ.”

Given the quote re: Biebs, we can reasonably surmise this song is another entry in the publicly soundtracked break-up between him and Selena Gomez, who’s traded her own weepy bars on the topic. Love blows, you know? Also, surely someone will note that this video bears some resemblance to the Disclosure doodles, but then Disclosure’s new doodles bear some resemblance to SBTRKT’s doodles, so why can’t we all just doodle on.
