A mother who hired a nanny through an online childcare service discovered the caretaker drunk and passed out next to her crying baby.
A New Jersey mom said she hired Susan Porfido-Gibson, 50, using the website Care.com. Instead of getting Mary Poppins, she ended up with Mel Gibson on a Malibu bender, according to NBC 10:
The mother left her child in Gibson’s care around 10 a.m. Friday. When the mother returned to her home around 1:45 p.m., she found Gibson passed out drunk on the floor while her son was crying with a soiled diaper, according to investigators.
Gibson then allegedly woke up and fled out the door of the home while stumbling and mumbling unintelligibly. An intoxicated Gibson then got into a 2009 Honda Accord and fled the scene before crashing into a fire hydrant and dislodging it from the ground, according to police.
Is this person Cameron Diaz’s character from Bad Teacher? The nanny was arrested and charged with DWI (her blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit), endangering the welfare of a child and other crimes. Three empty bottles of booze were also found inside her car. If there’s anyone on the planet who totally understands the desire to drink when you get around screaming children, it’s me. (Evidence: Every family wedding I have ever been to.) However, YIKES. I would like to make some good, vodka-related jokes here but sadly, I think this might be a situation where someone needs to make friends with Bill W.
A message on the homepage of the Care.com website reads “We’re making it easier to find better care for your whole family.” No mention of possibly incorporating a breathalyzer into that equation, however. A spokesperson for Care.com commented to the New York Daily News about the situation. “We are disheartened by this news,” the spokesperson said. “As this is an active investigation we are working with local authorities and cannot comment further.”
