Promoting her new vinyl box setTruckdriver, Gladiator, Mule, musician Neko Case has released a music video for “Man,” a song originally recorded for her excellent album, The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You.
In the past, she’s described “Man” as autobiographical, tellingRolling Stone in 2013 that “everybody wants to remind you that you’re a girl and I’m like, not if I don’t want to be. I grew up in America, man… The Seventies went out of its way to show little girls as firemen and stuff. Let’s not hash it out and make it firewoman or fireperson. Is a lioness not a lion, motherfucker?”
In the video, Case walks through a town square—appearing as a tornado of collage and color like a superhero made of comic book shreds—as a group of riotous and joyous little kids dance around her. The courthouse door has been locked from the outside—presumably locking up all of the square adults who’d tell Case that she can’t be a motherfucking lion.
