Condolences to any Parisians who require routine late-night touchups and the occasional after-hours emergency lipstick purchase: the Sephora flagship on Avenue des Champs-Élysées must henceforth close at 9 p.m. on the nose. Your urgent cosmetic needs notwithstanding, mademoiselles.
WWD has the details. Previously the store was allowed to keep its doors open until midnight (weekdays) and 1 a.m. (weekends), doing a brisk business. But no longer! Apparently you can’t just stay open whenever you like in France:
France’s court of last resort deemed that night hours are not inherent to the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton-owned perfumery chain’s activity…. In a judgment published Sept. 24 the court, referring to a French work code, wrote that “a night shift cannot be the normal mode of organization within a company and must not be implemented unless it is indispensable to its functioning.”
The English are Europe’s most annoying party animals; the French won’t sell you perfume and rouge at all hours. My God, what IS the world coming to?
