Oh Good, Sen. Tim Kaine Weighed In on the Taylor Swift/Travis Kelce Prenup Discourse

Last month, when TMZ sent a small crew to D.C. to bring its celebrity sensationalism into the realm of American politics, we noted that this would be either the best or the worst thing to happen to free speech. After a month, I was really hoping for more career-ending scandals, but the most dirt we’ve seen so far is a scared Lindsay Graham and Ted Cruz enjoying the attention way too much.

On Wednesday, a TMZ DC correspondent found Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) wandering the halls of the Capitol and pursued a line of questioning on issues that actually matter to constituents, like the discourse of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s prenuptial agreement (a discourse that the outlet itself started). On Tuesday, TMZ reported that a source claimed Swift and Kelce were shopping around for which state to draft their prenup. And what better person to respond to the nation’s inquiries than Tim Kaine (and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 running mate, if your memory doesn’t go back that far), as he was waiting for an elevator.

“I have a Taylor Swift question for you,” the correspondent, Jacob, said in TMZ’s video. “Ok, you’re going to find out what a dunce I am about pop culture,” Kaine responded. Then, to Jacob, Tim, and my surprise, the elevator opens to reveal a confused Hasidic man who had ended up on the wrong floor. “Are you getting off here?” asked Kaine, looking even more confused. “It’s a confusing elevator system,” Jacob assured the man, who got back in the elevator. These details aren’t pertinent to the story, but I love that we’re getting insider knowledge of the Capital’s elevator infrastructure. Anyway, back to Tay and Trav.

“Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce—they’re getting married, and right now they’re considering which states have the most favorable pre-nup laws,” Jacob said, “Do you think prenup laws should be federalized?”

“No,” Kaine responded, “I think you should only federalize something when it is really important that there be a national policy. Virginia has different rules about many different things than Kansas, where I grew up.” He went on to say that the “one size fits all ” policy across the country doesn’t make much sense for this particular issue.

“I’m not a big Taylor Swift music fan, but I’m a big Chiefs fan,” he added, “but if you’re spending too much time thinking about a prenup for a wedding… Hm…I’m not saying anything, I’m just saying ‘hmmm…’” as he caressed his chin. OK, Tim, well, that’s saying a lot. “I think they should live in Kansas City. I just hope that’s what they do.” Cue potential gotcha-headline: TIM KAINE HAS BROKEN HIS SILENCE ON WHERE TAY AND TRAV SHOULD DRAFT THE PRENUP.

Veep was a documentary, and the spin-off is TMZ DC. If this fills the void left by Julia Louis Dreyfus, then so be it.
