Oz the Great and Powerful Made All the Money This Weekend
LatestMaybe you went to see Oz the Great and Powerful: Don Juan Seduces All the Witches because you found yourself suddenly in the possession of psilocybin mushrooms, a box of wine, and burning desire to see some kick-ass summer movie previews. Maybe you avoided Oz because you heard through the grapevine that it represents a major step backwards for women on film and a thorough defilement of L. Frank Baum’s extensive, wackadoo source material. Either way, the new Oz movie (which isn’t really a real Oz movie) probably didn’t need your money — it made plenty on its own.
Despite ho-hum reviews, Oz pummeled its box office competition this weekend on its way to a $75 to $80 million opening. With news that Disney is already planning an Oz sequel, reports of the movie’s big opening spell “franchise.” Does that mean we’re going to get even more movies in which the Wizard is just an unctuous cad smarming his way through Oz’s directories of eligible humanoid bachelorettes? Maybe. Here’s hoping you didn’t polish off that whole bag of mushrooms.
