Today’s Google Doodle is Selena Quintanilla, aka the only Selena we recognize. (We recognize Gomez, too, but not as a mononymous entity, okay?) It’s never the wrong time to hear “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” a smash and even more so with sweet biographical representations of Selena’s life—the pizza, the lipstick mic, the bustier!
According to Perla Campos, the Mexican-American, Global Marketing Lead for Google Doodles who made this beautiful gem of a thing happen with illustrator Kevin Laughlin over the course of two years, “For months, Suzette [Selena’s sister] and I have been in touch. A few months ago we went down to meet her family to do research and we’ve been in constant communication ever since.”
To accompany the Google Doodle, the corporation has also made an interactive Selena Museum, with notes on her history as well as photographs, fan art, and costumes pulled from The Selena Museum in Corpus Christi. Says Suzette Quintanilla in a statement:
My family and I are honored and extremely excited to have worked with Google on this Doodle and exhibit launch, not only as a way to celebrate Selena’s life and the dreams she achieved, but as a tribute to Selena’s fans around the globe. This project is just yet another testament to the power of Selena’s legacy, which is still going strong 22 years later. Selena has always transcended cultural boundaries and having this Doodle featuring a strong, Latina woman on the homepage of Google around the world is a perfect example that. We hope that everyone – both fans and people learning about Selena for the first time – enjoys this celebration and feels the positivity and hope Selena embodied and still continues to represent today.
