In June, the New York Senator revealed that she favored a single-payer health care system, stating for the record, “health care should be a right, it should never be a privilege. We should have Medicare for all in this country.”
So far, at least seven senators have announced their intent to co-sponsor the legislation, which Sanders will officially unveil on Wednesday. On Monday, Senators Cory Booker and Jeff Merkley backed the initiative; Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kamala D. Harris have also already gotten on the single-payer train. At this point it’s fast becoming a prerequisite for any Democrat who wants to run for president in 2020.
Though Gillibrand has not yet formally announced that she will co-sponsor the bill, sources told Mic that she will do so soon and has privately felt supportive of the measure for some time.
