Snapchat Apologizes for Running Awful Rihanna Domestic Abuse Ad

Latest

Snapchat has removed an ad that ran on the app asking users if they would rather “slap Rihanna” or “punch Chris Brown.”

The ad, for a game called “Would You Rather,” was clearly a reference to when Chris Brown physically assaulted Rihanna in 2009, the horror of which should definitely not be the basis for a jokey “would you rather” scenario. “This means Snapchat approved an ad that makes light of domestic violence,” activist Brittany Packnett tweeted in response to the ad.

In a statement issued to the BBC Snapchat apologized for letting the ad slip through the cracks in their review process. “The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware,” the company wrote. “We are sorry that this happened.”

The apology comes shortly after Snapchat incorporated a new update and began to put more ads and paid content in your feeds, which most Snapchat users already hate.
