In some ways, Taylor Swift spent the better part of the last decade weaving a public narrative of progressive empowerment. As a “childless cat lady,” she publicly endorsed Kamala Harris in 2024; in 2020, she released a documentary about finding her political spine; and she consistently advocates for LGBTQ+ rights.
But on Friday night, as giant screens outside Madison Square Garden flashed “JUST&T MARRIED!” to ring in her nuptials to Travis Kelce, the shiny, corporate veneer of her brand—and now, the “Tayvis” industrial complex—collided head-on with reality.
As pictures of star-studded arrivals leaked online, fans were particularly stunned to see Steven J. Demetriou, the executive chair of Amentum Services, strolling into the venue as one of the estimated 1,000 invited guests.
If you’ve been following along, you’ll recognize Amentum as the corporation that operates Camp East Montana, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) tent detention facility located on the Fort Bliss military base in El Paso, Texas, which opened in August. The facility is also at the center of a massive humanitarian scandal.
Just over a month ago, the ACLU, Human Rights Watch, and several other legal advocacy groups filed a sweeping federal lawsuit against the facility, characterizing the conditions inside as “barbaric,” “inhumane,” and amounting to “unconstitutional punishment.” Reports show detainees are denied basic medical care and forced to endure near-freezing temperatures from blasted AC and hazardous desert dust storms inside poorly insulated, football-field-sized tents.
In less than a year of operation, the facility recorded at least three detainee deaths. One of those deaths, Geraldo Lunas Campos, was officially ruled a homicide by the El Paso County Medical Examiner, who cited “asphyxia due to neck and torso compression” following a violent use-of-force incident by facility guards—a fellow detainee told the Washington Post that at least five guards restrained and choked Geraldo Lunas Campos while he repeatedly called out “No puedo respirar” or “I can’t breathe.” Another death was a presumed suicide, occurring amidst allegations that facility guards participated in a staff betting pool on which detainee would die by suicide next.
Naturally, photos of the executive behind this facility arriving at MSG sent the internet into an immediate tailspin. Commenters branded the high-profile affair “grotesque and out of touch” on Reddit, while others fumed: “Taylor Swift isn’t MAGA…she just likes having them as friends.”
Predictably, Swifties rushed in to defend their billionaire idol. The narrative goes like this: Taylor didn’t invite the private prison tycoon; Travis did. As it turns out, Demetriou is the adoptive father of Reggie “Regrunt” King, who happens to be one of Kelce’s closest childhood friends. The classic “friend’s dad invite” excuse.
But this defense directly contradicts the “Liberal King” narrative that Swifties have aggressively conjured for Travis, who point to his work promoting Pfizer’s Covid vaccine and flu shots, and that he was one of the first major white NFL players to take a knee during the national anthem alongside his Black teammates in 2017.
But here is the thing: it is their wedding. When you have a guest list that includes Adam Sandler officiating and a highly scrutinized seating chart, you are responsible for the vibe of the room. A Reddit commenter put it bluntly: “Travis and Taylor are responsible for their guests. They are both s**t for inviting…many horrible people.”
If Taylor’s brand is officially entering its “don’t ask, don’t tell” political era, her fans might have to finally accept that their capitalist queen cares a whole lot more about a seamless romantic-corporate merger than who is financing the border wall. But hey, at least they have full control of the wedding photos!
