On this day in 1901, cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead was born in Philadelphia. Her father was a professor of finance at Wharton; her mother was a sociologist. Mead got three degrees, was married three times, traveled to Polynesia, was an assistant curator at the American Museum of Natural History and wrote ten books, including Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies, which outlined a region of Papua New Guinea where females are dominant and it’s no big whup and everything is fine.
