The Stunningly Gorgeous and Insanely Hideous Gowns of the BAFTA Awards

The EE British Academy Film Awards took place at The Royal Opera House in London, England last night and stars from both sides of the Atlantic were in attendance, dressed to impress.

Very at home in tuxedos at this point: Christoph Walz, Leo DiCaprio.

Perfect pairs: Christian Bale and Sibi Blazic; Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson; Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sari Mercer; Sam Claflin and Laura Haddock.

Tom Hardy and his beard arrived with Kelly Marcel, who wrote the screenplay for Saving Mr. Banks as well as the Fifty Shades of Grey script.

Philomena actor Sophie Kennedy Clark looks good in strapless gold; singer Laura Mvula (who performed a duet with Tinie Tempah at the awards) is stunning in ivory; Sherlock‘s Lara Pulver tries for sheer elegance.

More pale-hued gowns: Les Misérables actor Samantha Barks; Blue Jasmine‘s Sally Hawkins.

There were quite a few dark dresses on this red carpet. Both Helen McCrory (of Skyfall, Harry Potter and Penny Dreadful) and Blue Is The Warmest Color‘s Léa Seydoux showed some leg — from beneath a sheer layer of fabric.

You know if Michelle Rodriguez is going to rock a bombshell dress it’s got to have a touch of leather.

Full-skirted gowns for DJ Edith Bowman and actor Gillian Anderson.

Dame Judi Dench added a lovely touch of color to her black ensemble.

Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie shows off her shins; Maggie Gyllenhaal shows off her unflattering, overly ornate bodice; British Vogue editor Laura Bailey shows off her shoulders.

Two different takes on black: Cate Blanchett‘s sleek column and Laura Carmichael of Downton Abbey‘s playfully embellished.

Floor-length simplicity: Amy Adams and Uma Thurman.

Extra-special and capital D Drama! Helen Mirren.

Eye-catching metallic looks: TV and radio host Fearne Cotton in gold and Luther’s Ruth Wilson in pewter.

Oprah (posing with The Butler‘s David Oyelowo) is fabulous in oxblood.

More reddish shades: publicist Hannah Bagshawe (with boyfriend Eddie Redmayne); The White Queen‘s Eleanor Tomlinson; That Awkward Moment‘s Imogen Poots.

Red hot: Joely Richardson (currently starring in Vampire Academy and Endless Love); Quantum of Solace/Vampire Academy‘s Olga Kurylenko.

More cheerfully bright colors: Naomie Harris, Emma Thompson.

Winning for Brightest of Them All: Lily Allen, in Vivienne Westwood.

She also wins an award for Most Startled Hair Accessory.

Guess Who? For best dressed? Gorgeous, smashing, A+, well done, good show, excellent work. Lupita Nyong’o. Vibrant color, brass cuffs and belt, lipstick to kill or die for. Thank you.

Last, but not least: Hollywood royalty. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Tuxedos for two. I love her last-call-in-the-casino-piano-bar vibe.
