Kacey Musgraves’ “Biscuits,” the best song of 2015, finally has a video, and it’s as delightful as I had hoped it would be. The pun-filled anthem for people who wish everyone would stay out of their business gives the singer plenty of opportunities for cute Hee Haw-inspired sets and characters. There’s even a fun little karaoke bit at the end!

Earlier this week I was talking about Kacey Musgraves with a friend who’s also a proud fan. She said she’s recommended Musgraves’ music to plenty of people, and that most of them report back with, “I don’t like country music, but I love her.”
And that’s Musgraves’ most wonderful trick: making people believe they’re not really listening to country music. There’s something about her age and image that gives the illusion of transcending CMT, but don’t be fooled—when you’re lookin’ at her, you’re lookin’ at country. These songs—about loving your family and living in small towns and mommas and daddies and being dirt poor that—are 100%, non-crossover, hyphen-free country.
She isn’t here to exclude people with her message or pander to political groups. She just wants to sit on the porch and sing. And we’re all so lucky to have her.
