Tituss Burgess, beloved Titus Andromedon of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, is doing his utmost to bring a version of the 1996 Whitney Houston/Denzel Washington seasonal classic The Preacher’s Wife to Broadway.
That’s according to Playbill. Burgess has acquired the rights and written music and lyrics for a full-on musical take on the tale. (Which was itself technically a remake of the 1947 Cary Grant movie The Bishop’s Wife.) The musical’s spin on the story:
The Broadway-aimed musical is described as “the story of one woman (Julia’s) journey to find her voice and strengthen her husband (the Preacher) and larger church community during a moment of financial crisis and emotional overwhelm. In a fast-gentrifying Harlem when they’re at risk of losing their church and their hope, an Angel appears and reminds them that a church is not a building, but the people who inhabit it and the love they share.”
There’s an “industry reading” scheduled for next week—basically an early step in the development process that provides an opportunity to take the script so far out for a spin. Stay tuned!
