Todd Haynes Returns With Wonderstruck, a Time-Jumping New Children's Movie

Latest

Todd Haynes returns with his first movie since Carol with a new project that will also probably make you cry: a lovely-looking children’s movie titled Wonderstruck. Based on Brian Selznick’s 2011 illustrated novel of the same name, the story jumps between two young characters living in different eras (1927 and 1977) who run away to New York City in search of something mysterious.

The official trailer, which is introduced here by star Millicent Simmonds and starts about 30 seconds in, looks cute, and even though I am an adult I’m still a sucker for stories about children exploring all of NYC’s (quickly disappearing) enchanted nooks and crannies (think From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler or Eloise.) It also seems extremely important to point out that this movie reunites Haynes with Julianne Moore, who he directed in Far from Heaven and Safe.

The movie’s out October 20 and received rave reviews when it premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, so grab a box of tissues and save the date!
