Tove Lo Releases Video for 'Cool Girl,' the Catchiest Song of the Summer

Entertainment

“Cool Girl” is one of those songs that makes you want to do something horrible and then gyrate on top of a car. Conveniently, that’s exactly what Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson of Tove Lo does in the video, directed by Tim Erem; the video is the first in an evidently very dramatic series for LADY WOOD, Tove Lo’s sophomore album.

The video itself doesn’t completely live up to the thumping madness of the track, which Stereogum points out is Gone Girl-inspired (a sample of the mocking lyrics: “No, let’s not put a label on it / Let’s keep it fun / We don’t put a label on it / So we can run free, yeah / I wanna be free like you”). It’s a little too on-the-nose—at one point, the singer licks a coffin appearing to contain a dead version of herself—and I’m not sure that we need another music video-as-action-movie stunt.

Have to say though, I am weirdly very into this khaki overall/sports bra eleganza Tove Lo is working:

When it’s right, it’s right. Anyway, not to make this about me, but I also had a video concept for this song and I think it would have been better!
