Ungaro Closing Its NYC Store; Jersey Shore Stars To Hit Fashion Week?

  • Lindsay Lohan‘s debut Ungaro collection was critically panned, and so unpopular that the brand lost its only U.S. retailers besides its own boutique. Now that boutique is calling customers to tell them the store is closing on February 27. [TheAwl]
  • The Center for Environmental Health, a pressure group, tested jewelry bought at stores including Saks Fifth Avenue and Aeropostale and found it had high levels of the heavy metal cadmium, which is toxic to humans. There is no federal limit on cadmium for jewelry. [CBS]

  • Kellan Lutz scored a Calvin Klein underwear campaign, along with the tennis player Fernando Vasco, the soccer player Hidetoshi Nakata, and fellow actor Mehcad Brooks. However, you can’t really see any of their abs, because Calvin Klein put a big red “X” on each poster. Why? [WWD]
  • Gucci is rerunning a 1960s campaign featuring Veruschka and Peter Sellers to pimp its new watches. [WWD]
  • Olsenboye officially launches at JC Penney today. But the twins have one more line up their sleeves: a denim collection called Textile Elizabeth & James that takes inspiration from the 1970s. So far, there are only three styles — the Stevie, the Joni, and the Hendrix. (Wonder how long it took to come up with those names?) The jeans will be out in March, and a full collection under the new trademark will roll out for fall. [WWD]
  • Robert Duffy has been tweeting and photographing the run-up to the Marc Jacobs show. (They sorted out their stage design problems just fine, thanks.)   • The cast of Jersey Shore is demanding tickets to fashion week shows. Or, if you believe their reps, being asked to attend and even model in fashion week shows (Kim Kardashian, is that your brilliant idea?). It’s not actually terribly surprising that inexplicably popular/notorious individuals might be invited to a place where they’ll get their picture taken, given the Real Housewives who sat front-row last season, and the Ashley Dupré incident of a year ago, to name just two recent instances of people who have nothing to do with fashion ending up at the tents anyway.   • Something called the Global Language Monitor has determined that “Lady Gaga” is the top fashion buzzword of the, ahem, “uncoming” season. (Perhaps they could monitor their own language from time to time.) [Language Monitor]
  • This Sunday’s New York Times Magazine will feature a story shot by Ryan McGinley in which Rodarte dressed various Winter Olympians. The preview shot, of skater Johnny Weir in a knitted jumpsuit, is outstanding. [WWD]
  • Victoria Beckham, and her kids, spray-painted some t-shirts to benefit a charity called Sport Relief. Now turned into screenprints, the shirts are on sale across the UK, and the women’s one is modeled by Sophie Ellis Bextor. [Telegraph]
  • Miranda Kerr spent $2,500 at Victoria’s Secret in L.A. Which is odd, considering she’s an Angel, and all. [TMZ]

  • Charlotte Kemp Muhl, the model best known for dating Sean Lennon, is the first ever face of shoe brand Sam Edelman. Kemp Muhl appears nude in the campaign, but for her shoes. [WWD]
  • Abercrombie is still struggling to retrieve its lost retail mojo. [WSJ]
  • Esprit’s income fell 5.2% in the last six months of 2009, but because analysts had expected an even worse result from the retailer, its shares still rose 7.9%. [BW]
