Vogue Put Three Models on Its September Cover

Latest

Photos of Vogue‘s September issue have slithered onto the Internet, and, surprisingly, the biggest cover of the year features three models (Joan Smalls, Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss).

This is a big departure from the typical September issue cover fare; normally, mags feature very famous celebrities (last year Vogue‘s cover star was Jennifer Lawrence, and the year before it was Lady Gaga). But it seems like Vogue is really trying to push models back into the spotlight: an anonymous source tells Fashionista that the cover is a pull-out featuring Arizona Muse, Edie Campbell, Imaan Hammam, Fei Fei Sun, Vanessa Axente and Andreea Diaconu in addition to the main image.

Ten years ago, Vogue did the exact same thing with its September issue — Daria Werbowy, Natalia Vodianova and Gisele Bündchen were on the cover, and six other models appeared on the cover gatefold. It was a very white, blond and blue-eyed affair:

This year, of the nine models, three are women of color — which isn’t great, but it’s a marked improvement, especially since Smalls is featured on the cover.

So far, all we have to go on is images that have been Tweeted and Instagrammed out. Here’s a video of the issue, posted by a luxury shopping company (it shows the cover and then some ads. It’s also set to Avicii 🙁 ):

It looks like Vogue‘s gonna be talking about Instagram, which is fun, I guess. At least they didn’t put a hashtag on the cover this time.
