Ariana Grande, one of the few artists I’d trust to cover a Whitney Houston song other than myself at karaoke, sounded expectedly effortless covering a pair of the late singer’s classics on Greatest Hits.
As part of Thursday night’s live two-hour finale, which I wouldn’t ever have the patience to watch live, Grande very crisply covered Houston’s ’80s dreamer hit “How Will I Know” and did solid justice to her lesser appreciated Bodyguard soundtrack song “Queen of the Night.” Watch the clip above.
This is the first season of Greatest Hits, a show that celebrates legends largely by having artists of today cover their jams. It’s essentially the tribute portion of awards show as its own show, or just a different, occasionally insufferable viral strain of Lip Sync Battle. Last night’s finale also featured Adam Lambert singing Faith Hill and in a previous episode, Fifth Harmony performed a Destiny’s Child medley. Bye, I have to go belt “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” very loudly now.
