We Got an Update on Rose Byrne’s Bearded Dragon

If your brain is broken this week after parsing through the Brooklyn Beckham family drama and following the Blake Lively saga like a detective, I’m pleased to announce I have some good, simple news for your little battered brain. News that will cause zero headaches: Rose Byrne is smitten with her new bearded dragon.

Earlier this month, during her Golden Globe acceptance speech for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Byrne slipped in a thank-you that immediately caught my attention: “I want to thank my husband, Bobby Cannavale,” she said. “He couldn’t make it here because we’re getting a bearded dragon, and he went to a reptile expo in New Jersey. So thank you, baby.” From that moment on, I was invested, not just in the pet, but also in what seems to be a very unique relationship between her and Bobby.

On Thursday, the Oscar nominations reached Australia around 2 a.m., from where Byrne called into Today With Jenna & Sheinelle to share her excitement about her first nomination. But of course Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones, like me, were more curious about the new pet. When asked how the family’s bearded dragon was doing, Byrne had nothing but good things to say, “He’s so sweet. We’re all smitten. The kids are happy. Such a sweetie.” Delightful!

The bearded dragon, who has yet to be named, has already proven to be a surprisingly effective asset to Byrne’s Oscar campaign.

Though Byrne was quick to underscore her gratitude and admiration for her fellow nominees, joking, “I feel like I’m the naughty kid that snuck in the back of the bus. I can’t believe it.” If I Had Legs I’d Kick You follows Linda (played by Byrne) as she navigates her daughter’s mystery illness, a missing persons case, and an unhinged relationship with her co-worker and therapist (played by Conan O’Brien). Why do I feel like I’m campaigning for this movie? I love it. I want her to win!

Not that a measly little plebeian like me has any sway with the Academy, but if you see this film, there’s simply no denying Byrne and the brilliant writer/director Mary Bronstein. Rooting for you and yours, Rose—yours, of course, meaning the bearded dragon.
