Which Way, Timothée Chalamet? Met Gala or Knicks Game?

We come to you with our continuing coverage of the first Monday in May, aka Met Monday, aka the most important day of the year for your most parasocial fashion-critiquing social media mutuals and, of course, Timothée Chalamet, who is faced with a life-altering decision this year, a la Troy Bolton in High School Musical 3: Senior Year—Basketball or love?

As gala attendees begin arriving at the Met carpet around 6 p.m. EST this evening, we’ll watch (from our plebian phones) as stars show off their “Fashion is Art”–themed looks—assuming they’re actually on theme (which, of course, we’ll be the judge of tomorrow, so stay tuned). Meanwhile, not but a stone’s throw away (or a 20-minute cab ride), at 8 p.m., the New York Knicks will face off against the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, which brings us to our central debate: Which way, Timothée?

It’s a safe bet that Chalamet’s girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, and the rest of the Kardashian–Jenner crew will be amongst the gala attendees tonight. Chalamet has only attended once before, when he served as a co-chair for the 2021 theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” There, he wore a white Haider Ackermann set with a pair of white Chucks and famously walked 10 blocks from his hotel to the gala. But now that he has taken things to the next level with Jenner (thanking his “partner of three years” in his acceptance speech at the Critics’ Choice Awards), he may be subjected to boyfriend duty.

On the other hand, Chalamet is a die-hard Knicks fan and attended two of the playoff games against the Atlanta Hawks last week, including one with Jenner (where he may or may not have manspread on Tina Fey), so really, there’s no doubt in my mind that he will choose basketball.

Jenner’s ex, Travis Scott, attended the gala with her twice, in 2018 and 2019, which brings me to the next item of business: the “Met Gala Curse,” a recently unearthed phenomenon in which celebrity couples break up shortly after attending the Met Gala arm in arm. (Jenner and Scott broke up shortly after in 2019). So if I’m right, and Chalamet does not attend with Jenner, they could just buy themselves a few more years of red carpets together, or a lifetime! Or perhaps Chalamet will be amongst the celebrities sitting out of this year’s events, due to the Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos of it all.

On Sunday, Chalamet and Jenner were papp’d together in NYC attending The Fear of 13 on Broadway with Kris and Kim Kardashian. Clearly, the gang is all here. The only question remaining is: Will Timothee choose basketball or love? Place your bets below.
