All the Bold, Weird & Patriotic Outfits Celebrities Wore This Election Season

Entertainment

All election season long, celebrities have been speaking to us with their style and making political statements in their outfits. In the above ensemble from this week, Lady Gaga went extremely out in what looks like a Carrie Bradshaw Election Day gala look that also has strong Mary Poppins vibes. Not only does it encourage people to vote, it also conveys the idea that the election has been a roaming circus so why not rock a costume. She’s not the only one. Below, more celebs in fun, cool and interesting politically-themed garb.

Beyoncé’s powerful look from her performance at the Hillary Clinton Get Out the Vote concert in Cleveland serves as a prime example that one can make a sartorial political statement without being overpowering. The polka dot pantsuit says business chic and the back-up dancers in Democratic blue and “I’m With Her” tees really make this pop.

Katy Perry literally caped for Clinton at a concert event in Cleveland. Aesthetically speaking, she’s been one of Clinton’s most rabid supporters, and this pageant-y look is among her more elegant and understated visions, with a touch of drama. More from Perry ahead.

No one was more dedicated to supporting Clinton in every clothing type imaginable than Katy Perry, whose political gear works in part because she’s kept it lighthearted. With these three looks, she went from Inauguration chic to candy striper to my favorite, a leather skirt with an asymmetrical hem. Good election style requires a sense of humor, i.e. her t-shirt that reclaims Trump’s bizarre “What a nasty woman” debate remark.

Perry’s Mrs. Captain America dress worn during a 2015 appearance is one of her least impressive because flags are cliché. The other look is okay minus the handkerchief.

Here’s Kendall Jenner keeping her Rock the Vote style Go See basic, first in a campaign tee de rigueur and then a camisole with flag jeans. The choker adds a little edge and speaks to the millennial wannabe-’90s babies.

Whoa. Jennifer Lopez’s outfit has too many ideas and patterns working against it—a giant plume, stars, stripes, thigh boots, everything—and yet I feel like it works. Just like America.

Love America Ferrera jazzing up a standard campaign tee with her own name on it by combining it with a popping mustard blazer. Only Anna Wintour could make a regular ole campaign shirt seem casually upscale.

Both Demi Lovato and Emma Roberts could use something extra to punch up their preppy HRC tees, but the purpose of publicly supporting Clinton was achieved.

Better here, Demi’s combination of a modern wide-legged gray pantsuit with the t-shirt really suits her. And Christina Aguilera, in an Instagram video message, found the best way to stretch the message of women’s rights in a busty tee paired with a simple black choker.

If that dog thinks Selma Hayek looks fine, then so do I. And once again, Beyoncé is proof that cool campaign fashion can be easy. Just pair a t-shirt with cool ripped denim and boom, you look hip and woke.

Jon Hamm and Jake Gyllenhaal were cute and understated in matching campaign tees at the Get Out the Vote event in Cleveland. Equal pay, equal slay.

Pusha T openly supported Clinton on numerous occasions and also used his fashion sense to subliminally sway voters. Note, on the right, the t-shirt bearing Clinton’s famous clapback tweet, a hip and subtle way to show support.

We’ve arrived at the Lena Dunham portion of the program, which you knew was coming. Throughout the campaign, she’s been not only vocal in support for Clinton but also highly visible, in case you thought Katy Perry was alone. Consider this look the Michael Kors monogram purse version of election style.

Not hating the look on the left, where her Clinton screen print tee outfit peeks out just right under a leather jacket.

A bit much.

Dunham wore Clinton’s face and also wore Rihanna wearing Clinton’s face, but of course Rihanna did it better.

Yes, Rihanna showed support the subliminal way, in just a tee and short-shorts, paired with a monogram Louis Vuitton clutch that only she can rock without being considered basic.

Chloë Grace Moretz, who gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention that wasn’t aired on many stations, took the campaign support to her nails. Nice.

Who could forget the time Meryl Streep rocked head-to-toe stripes and stars at the convention. Miley Cyrus added some fuzzy texture to her look, because sometimes just wearing red, white and blue says enough.

Tracee Ellis Ross is my kinda lady, wearing a white dress with a tiny hint of support. Overall, Clinton’s people did a smart thing by creating marketing icons and signage that made it easy for people like Neil Patrick Harris and Lin-Manuel Miranda to pair them with simple elements and still look normal.
