Mad Men might be ending, but Peggy Olson is not done breaking glass ceilings. Elisabeth Moss, who plays Olson on the show, is rumored to be the top pick for the lone female lead in season two of True Detective. Advertising, law enforcement — is there any profession that Peggy can’t conquer?
Despite previous whispers that the new season of True Detective would be entirely female-led, show creator Nic Pizzolatto has since stated that while “there is a strong (lead) female character,” he wouldn’t “say it is female-led or anything like that.”
According to the latest news, True Detective season 2 will feature four leads — Frank Semyon, a businessman with a violent past (a role reportedly written for Vince Vaughn), military vet Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch is the current frontrunner for the part), Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell is close to inking the deal) and Ani Bezzerides, a sheriff with gambling and alcohol addictions. Moss is in talks to play Bezzerides.

The second season of True Detective will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt city manager of a fictional California city who’s found brutally murdered amid a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change freeway gridlock in the state. Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it. They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought.
Caspar’s 52-year-old corpse is found on a lonely stretch of Pacific Coast Highway near Big Sur — satanic symbols etched on his chest. It turns out he had a penchant for rough sex and may have been involved in the occult.
Moss won a Golden Globe earlier this year for playing troubled detective Robin Griffin in Jane Campion’s excellent Top of the Lake. With that in mind, it’s safe to assume she’d be well suited for the role in True Detective.
