So sorry to interrupt, but did you realize that Sasha Velour, current reigning Rupaul’s Drag Race champion and bald-headed beauty, is also a very talented artist who drew today’s Google Doodle featuring Marlene Deitrich?!
Today would be Marlene’s Dietrich’s 116th birthday and to commemorate her legacy as not only a performer but also for her efforts during World War II selling war bonds, entertaining the troops, and speaking out against Hitler and the Nazis, Google had Sasha Velour do a lil’ doodle in her honor.
Sasha Velour, if you don’t know, loves Marlene Dietrich. Sasha Velour WAS Marlene Dietrich in the Snatch Game—a choice that allowed her to really lean into the whole “I’m-actually-a-little-pretentious-but-it’s-fine-somehow-it-works” shtick that propelled her to the top. Also, she looked incredible and really pulled it off.
“She was a wild original!” Sasha said to Google. “Despite the pressures of the time, she followed her own course, especially in terms of politics and gender.“As a drag queen, that’s particularly inspiring to me. Plus, she just had this power to her…in every role she’s mysterious and strong, brilliant. That’s what I aspire to be when I step on the stage.”
