German Police Chief Suggests Women Avoid Dating Men If They Want to Stay Safe
“Better not get into a relationship with a man," Dirk Peglow said, somewhat jokingly. "If you do, the risk is much higher of becoming a victim of psychological or physical violence.”

It’s a universal truth as old as time that not only do men fucking suck, they’re dangerous. So in Germany this week, one man shared a brilliant piece of advice to keep yourself safe from men: don’t date them.
The cheeky advice doesn’t come from just any old man—this is one of Germany’s top police officers. Dirk Peglow, the head of the Federal Association of German Detectives, spoke with news channel Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen’s Dunja Hayali on Monday to break down Germany’s latest crime statistics, which came out earlier this month. The data found that while registered cases of crime went down at least 4.4% in the last year, rates of sexual assault, violence, and rape rose by 8.5%.
“[In 2024,] statistically at least two women per day were victims of homicide or attempted homicide, and things look the same with sexual offenses,” he said. When Hayali asked if he had any advice for women, he replied, somewhat jokingly, “Better not get into a relationship with a man. If you do, the risk is much higher of becoming a victim of psychological or physical violence.” Damn! Why didn’t I think of that?

The clip unsurprisingly went viral, forcing Peglow to explain that his comment was “obviously an exaggeration” and that—god forbid a man takes offense—it’s obviously not about all men. “It was not meant as advice to be taken literally…The overwhelming majority of men are not violent and are not criminals,” he told Bild, a German tabloid.
Alas, it took less than 72 hours for men to prove Peglow’s point.
Speaking to Focus Online on Wednesday, Hayali said that because of the clip, she and Peglow were getting death threats. “Now there are men who do not criticize the rise in violence against women, but instead express violent fantasies and threats of violence against [Peglow] and me.” Yikes. Avoid men, indeed.
