Viral Video Serves as Important Reminder Why Male Loneliness Epidemic Exists

Few things are more annoying than men, and even fewer things are more annoying than men deliberately trying to make your life worse. So when a news clip of sports reporter Olivia Cleary being interrupted by unruly jagoffs went viral over the weekend, the internet was quick to point to the systemic annoyances of dude.

Cleary, an Oregon-based reporter with KEZI, an ABC affiliate, had been reporting live on Saturday’s game between Oregon State University and Lafayette University when she was accosted by a group of #theboyz. Among them was one who kept bellowing “six-seven” (an inexplicable Gen Alpha meme which, apparently, Gen Z boys find funny) at the top of his lungs; one who stuck his entire head into the camera frame (and then his hand); and another yelling “Help! Help me!” Speaking out about the incident on Twitter, OSU’s Beaver Athletics account wrote: “The actions displayed do not reflect the values of Beaver Nation or our fan code of conduct.”

“Is this really typical of younger gen z men?” one user tweeted. “I’ve heard stories but I find it hard to believe it’s this bad.” Another called the men out for their “ridiculous behavior,” tweeting, “Olivia did not deserve this. No one does.” Someone commented that Cleary looked visibly upset in the video, saying, “you can literally see a tear in her eye towards the end. This is fucking disgusting.”

The viral clip was originally shared by KEZI sports director Brett Taylor, and later reposted by another KEZI reporter who called it “extremely frustrating“ and “ridiculous behavior.” He tweeted, “Olivia did not deserve this, no one does,” later adding that she “did an incredible job working through it.”

Clearly has since acknowledged the video, tweeting that “Things got a little out of hand,” but “live TV is unpredictable and sometimes you have to roll with it!”

It’s been six months since the CDC released its 2024 births report, revealing that U.S. fertility has reached a new low. The decline most likely has to do with economic turmoil, climate change, or just a delay in the numbers. But behavior like this certainly doesn’t help.
