I’m not inclined to trust anything that comes from the mouth of Grimes (né Claire Boucher). I mean, this is a woman who not only willingly dated Elon Musk (which included dates to his Tesla factory in Fremont, California, and “rapid-fire” Lord of the Rings trivia), but procreated with him. Three times! But that doesn’t mean I don’t treat the singer’s many musings (her experimental eyeball surgery to cure seasonal depression, for instance) like an anthropological study. Which is to say, I will be mulling over this piece of news for a very long time.
On Wednesday, Grimes posted a selfie showing off her new face tattoo. But it’s not just any old ink. The tattoo (a semi-circle over her left eye) was done by something called a cybersigilism tattoo artist, known as Glyphomancer. Cybersigilism, upon a quick Google search, is a style of tattooing that marries ancient symbolism with futuristic aesthetics. Tracks!
“I think @glyphomancer is onto something truly novel and innovative with her work esp on face tats- there’s a true beauty, delicacy, and innovation here imo,” Grimes complimented the artist in her caption. Personally, I think it looks like a case of ringworm, but what do I know??? I had to Google what the hell Cybersigilism was.
According to Grimes, she had to “spend like ten years emotionally working up to” the tattoo for virtually nothing as no one immediately noticed it: “I guess I drew on my face too much and literally no one noticed, not even my parents…” So, not only does the tattoo look like a fungal infection or a deep scratch, but Grimes’ own family didn’t even notice it. I hope she doesn’t take too hard a look at her life.
Finally, Grimes concluded the post: “Feel like tats are in a crazy renaissance period that’s sort of under appreciated atm.” Do you guys remember tattoos??? Well, they’re so back.
Thanks for letting us know, girlie!
