I Paid 2 Whole American Dollars to Read About Alex Cooper’s Husband So You Don’t Have To

It’s been a rough week for Alex Cooper of Call Her Daddy, who publicly challenged influencer Alix Earle to a trial-by-content after she caught Earle shading her online. “What’s the beef?” demanded Cooper. Alas, for the week that followed, nary a sliver of beef was divulged, but people talked, and perhaps Karma had other plans for Cooper…
On Monday, Bloomberg published a report detailing Cooper’s struggling media company, Unwell, and exposing Cooper’s husband and co-CEO, Matt Kaplan, as a shitty boss. According to the report—which was behind a $2 paywall, YOU’RE WELCOME—over the past two years, while Cooper has been evading her “mean girl” allegations, Unwell has experienced severe turnover and failed attempts at new shows. All the while, according to employees, Kaplan regularly berates the staff.
After Cooper and Kaplan wed in 2024, they also wed their business ventures (adorbs!), bringing Unwell and Kaplan’s production company under the same roof: Trending. Under Trending, Cooper and Kaplan produce reality TV, acquire podcasts, and sell electrolyte beverages—the big 3 of VC. So, while Cooper is defending her podcast empire against Earle, Kaplan is left to deal with numerous other ventures, such as the Unwell Winter Games, a competition show starring disgraced reality TV stars. The show will feature Dakota Mortensen of the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, of course, because being in an active domestic violence investigation didn’t interfere with the filming schedule.
According to Bloomberg, the show’s production suffered “logistical problems” keeping influencers in line, and during production, Kaplan “berated the staff on set and threatened to prevent them from ever working in Hollywood again if they messed up, resulting in a prominent, long-experienced crew member breaking down in tears.” After the incident, the crew filed formal complaints and threatened to quit if Kaplan continued to disrespect the crew. Loser husband alert.
On top of Kaplan’s temper (and probably because of it), Unwell lost their head of brand marketing, chief growth officer, and head of network—the second person to fill the position in under three years. At least 20 of their 100-person staff left between 2025 and 2026, but not to worry, because they are remedying their shortage with a new executive producer hire, Ellen Rocamora, a long-time producer of The Ellen DeGeneres Show! That bodes well for workplace morale.
Unwell’s programming also took a hit in 2025 after they launched three new podcasts, all of which were canceled within the year. Earle’s podcast was also under the Unwell empire until February 2025, when it was suddenly announced that Earle would take her Get Ready With Me’s elsewhere.
What’s the beef? Well, I think we might have found the answer…
