Jessie Ware's New Video Is Giving Us Big Little Lies in Mallorca

Entertainment

Here’s the moody, blue, and mysterious video for Jessie Ware’s latest single “Midnight,” featuring Ms. Ware wandering around some empty streets wearing an impeccable outfit and some very good highlighter.

Plot-wise, there’s not much here, but it’s still nice to look at. First she’s in a car, then she’s out of said car, stalking the empty streets, on a mission to find someone or escape. Is it the man and the glass of wine ditched in the pool, introduced to us via quick jump cuts?

Stereogum suggests that she’s looking for someone, which is plausible, given that she spends a fair amount of time looking over her shoulder plaintively, but I reject that narrative in favor of another that feels more legit to me: she did something bad to that person in the pool and is living out her best Big Little Lies fantasy, wandering a dusky beach with her shoes in her hands, staring at the ocean, thinking about some shit or just planning her next meal.

The video feels a little incongruous for the song, which is vague enough to allow for interpretation—a beautiful, late-summer vessel to fill with your own patented blend of heartache, ennui and desire. I like it. Do you?
