Brace for a more aggressively viral, relentlessly wacky Golden Globe Awards than ever before, because Jimmy Fallon will be hosting come 2017.
That’s according to Entertainment Weekly. “This is the most spontaneous and uninhibited award show on television, and Jimmy’s playful, disarming comedic brilliance makes him the ideal host to enhance and elevate the sense of fun and irreverence that’s made the Golden Globes one of the premier events of the entire broadcast year,” said NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt. This is a departure from the last few years, in which they went with either Ricky Gervais or Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.
Fallon previously hosted the Emmy Awards in 2010, though that was before he took over The Tonight Show and settled into his current comedic persona. He’s known for goofy coziness rather than roasting, and it seems like NBC is leaning into the Golden Globes’ rep as slightly unhinged in a way that could make it more rehearsed and less truly unpredictable. (Which is what everybody likes about the Globes.)
But the odds seem decent that Fallon’s penchant for putting celebs in determinedly silly situations will collide with the Golden Globes’ open bar at least once or twice—which is all we really want from award shows, after all.
