Lands' End Apologizes for Featuring Gloria Steinem, Pulls Fund for Women's Equality Donations
LatestLands’ End has issued a statement apologizing for featuring an interview with Gloria Steinem in its spring catalog, and appears to have pulled the option on their website to donate to the ERA Coalition’s Fund for Women’s Equality. They are so sorry they dared to say something nice about this influential feminist. (That religious school uniform trade must be truly massive.)
ABC 17 News—covering a Missouri Catholic school’s decision to drop the company as a supplier—has the company’s apology:
“We understand that some of our customers were offended by the inclusion of an interview in a recent catalog with Gloria Steinem on her quest for women’s equality. We thought it was a good idea and we heard from our customers that, for different reasons, it wasn’t. For that, we sincerely apologize. Our goal was to feature individuals with different interests and backgrounds that have made a difference for our new Legends Series, not to take any political or religious stance.”
This comes after discontent among anti-abortion customers burbled into the conservative blogosphere and filled the company’s Facebook page with angry comments and pictures of catalogs thrown in the trash. Though they’ve distanced themselves from Steinem herself, Lands’ End has not addressed their year-long commitment to donating money to the Fund for Women’s Equality; as of yesterday, they would donate $3 if you added the ERA Coalition label to your Lands’ End item of choice. That option appears to be gone from their website now.
