Helen Hunt, who I think about every day, and Paul Reiser, whose name I had to Google, are both very interested in participating in a Mad About You revival. Sony Pictures Television Studios is very interested in finding a home for the project. Its former network NBC is very interested in giving no comment on the subject. This is all very exciting.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC is actually “not in the mix” for any kind of reboot, but the prospects for a compelling season that would completely revamp the original series canon ending. Paul and Jamie will be dealing with their 17-year-old daughter Mabel’s college acceptance, instead of seeing her as an adult filmmaker pulling a Parent Trap. In a way, Sony TV is trying to parent Trap the entire series—if they make it, a network will fall in love with it all over again!
While Reiser has previously been down on reboots, in October he said, “If we can find the story to tell, and anybody’s interested, I’d be open to it.” Anybody interested?
It’s been a weird year, what with Will and Grace coming back, and Roseanne, and also Fuller House happened awhile ago, what the fuck?! I’ve been blogging these never ending reboot announcements with weary cynicism, but no more/ Does the world need more stories about a couple of neurotic rich people who long ago faded from relevance? No, but we will get them, and every other show that did remotely well in the ’90s back. And it’s okay. It’s good. I love it. Reboots: I am mad. About. You.
