Michelle Obama Recalls Confusion Over the Big-Ass Box Melania Trump Gifted Her

When Melania Trump handed Michelle Obama a blue Tiffany box on Inauguration Day last year, Obama had no idea what to do with the damn package, which turned out to contain…a frame.

A frame! A gift that’s in the top-three of generic gifts that work for any holiday, birthday, baby shower, etc. A gift you can give anyone, including your nemesis. “It was a lovely frame,” Obama said (apparently an extra-large frame, judging from the box) during a visit to The Ellen Show (the episode will air Thursday), her first interview since reclaiming her sanity outside of the White House.

The former FLOTUS then recalled not knowing what to do with the box once it was handed to her. “Well, there’s all this protocol,” she says. “I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you you’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here. Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like, okay, what am I supposed to do with this gift?”


Shocking that a Trump would disregard protocol. Thankfully, the public wound up with a gift of our own: the expression Michelle Obama gave in the moment that screamed “Help.”

Obama continued, telling Ellen, “Everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box. And I’m thinking do we take the picture with? And then my husband saved the day. See, he grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out. No staff, no one. I was like what do you do with the box?”
