Natalie Portman Condemns Galliano Despite Dior Contract

On Monday evening, Natalie Portman released a statement on the video of Dior designer John Galliano declaring, “I love Hitler. People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be fucking gassed.” (Last week Galliano was arrested for an alleged racist, anti-Semitic assault.) She told The New York Times:

“I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments that surfaced today. In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.”

Portman had reportedly planned to wear a Galliano creation to the Oscars, but she swapped it for a Rodarte gown after hearing about his arrest. Portman has an endorsement deal for the fragrance Miss Dior Cherie. Dior suspended Galliano on Friday, and it’s unclear how this will affect her contract with the company.
