Please Watch This Alarmingly Upbeat 1964 Ad for the New York City Subway

In Depth

To help stage the 1964 World’s Fair, the NYCTA added special trains from midtown Manhattan to the site at Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Promotion included this commercial, which is unnervingly chipper.

The video comes via Gothamist. “Part of the fun of the World’s Fair is the subway special that takes you there!” promises the jingle, as a young couple laughs uproariously about something to which we are not privy. A mere 15 cents! Hop aboard! Step lightly now! You’re going to have a good time at the World’s Fair and by God you’re going to like it or you won’t relish the consequences! Big smiles, everybody!!!
