​Sunday Night Sign-Off: A Reading of Some Of James Franco's Poetry

Thank you for joining us this evening. Tonight, Jezebel.com will be offering some high brow artistic indulgences of the finest caliber. And now, excerpts of poetry from James Franco’s collection Directing Herbert White, a continuation of Franco’s focus on the essence of celebrity, and the blurring lines between reality and fiction.

“Ledger” by James Franco:

“There had been a time
When we were up for the same roles,
10 Things I Hate about You
(Based on The Taming of the Shrew),
And The Patriot –
Funny, you were Australian and so was Mel –
You were the knight in A Knight’s Tale…”

“Fake” by James Franco:

“There is a fake version of me
And he’s the one that writes
These poems.
He has an attitude and a swagger
That I don’t have.”

“Ask” by James Franco:

“Love came – like viscosity filling a tube –
And you killed it with a bunch of thrusts.”

But I think my favorite is “River,” which is told from River Phoenix’s point of view. I have to include Charlotte Runcie’s commentary from the Telegraph because it’s pretty great.

“Hello, James, it’s River.”
“I died at age 23,” River reminds James, sounding a bit like a Wikipedia entry. “Ten years before your age now.”
And then, startlingly: “James, you’re the Jesus age.

JAMES, YOU’RE THE JESUS AGE.
